It's not always necessary to go straight to a bodyshop or have a smart repair done.

There are a few problems with smart repairs. Over time your paintwork will change colour slightly with exposure to the sun's UV rays, so getting an exact match may be quite hard and some cases impossible. You'll also alter the orange peel and depending on colour and area of damage along with panels affected suffer from poor blending.

Another factor is the originality of that car or bike - by having a smart repair carried out you are taking away from the originality and can actually devalue it.

All is not lost though!

In some cases you can get paint transfer marks, which although on first glance may look quite horrific and unsightly - with the correct tools and techniques can usually be removed.

Most likely you'll have some paint transfer and some marks. These marks may be fine indentations which can certainly be reduced and made to look much better.

There are also various paintwork repair companies which offer great touch up kits. These are needed in the event the damage has taken any clear coat and paint layers off, or, in the event of stone chips.

Although its not always possible to completely "fix" or "hide" the damage it is possible to make it visibly improved.
